SPi begins filming the first Portuguese Microdrama project
SPi has begun filming the first of five Microdramas for RTP, the first Portuguese project in vertical format, placing Portugal at the forefront of new trends in digital fiction.
Designed for mobile consumption and distribution exclusively in vertical format, microdramas represent a new way of storytelling that is more agile, direct, and aligned with current viewing habits.
Widely established in Asia and rapidly expanding in markets such as China, South Korea, the US, and Brazil, the Microdrama phenomenon has seen explosive growth, with dedicated apps adding up to hundreds of millions of monthly users and revenues skyrocketing in recent years.
In this pioneering project, RTP and SPi are launching five micro-dramas, each consisting of 20 episodes of 1.5 minutes, covering genres ranging from thriller to comedy.
The original idea is by Pedro Lopes, with a script by InĂªs Gomes, Susana Romano, and Marina Ribeiro. Filming will take place between December and January 2026, and the content will be available on TikTok, Instagram, and RTP Play.
Manuel Amaro da Costa is coordinating this project.
Microdramas is thus establishing itself as a pioneering project that redefines how stories are created, distributed, and consumed in Portugal.
