SPi's new project presented at Conecta Fiction & Entertainment 2025
The Spanish city of Cuenca is currently hosting Conecta Fiction & Entertainment 2025, where the project SMALL DEATH IN LISBON, produced by SPi, was presented yesterday, 17th June, in the category of Direct Pitch for Streaming Films, by its author, Pedro Lopes, and the production company's executive director, João Maia Abreu.
Conecta Fiction & Entertainment is one of the most important international professional markets in the audiovisual industry, dedicated to the creation, development, financing, and commercialisation of television content, both fiction and entertainment. Since its first edition in 2017, it has brought together more than 5,000 professionals from over 50 countries, making it a space of excellence for networking, partnerships, and the presentation of new projects.
SMALL DEATH IN LISBON, presented by SPi, is a crime thriller with deep Portuguese roots, developed by the creators of Netflix's first Portuguese original series, GLORIA. Based on the award-winning novel by Robert Wilson, the script centres on the investigation into the murder of Catarina, a 15-year-old teenager who is found dead on a beach near Lisbon. As detective José Afonso Melo delves into the case, he uncovers a complex web of political corruption, economic interests, and secrets from Portugal's fascist past, including the links between the national bank and the Nazi regime, involving German gold transferred during the Second World War. More than an intense, cinematic thriller, this project offers a courageous political commentary on less debated aspects of recent Portuguese history.
With this presentation, SMALL DEATH IN LISBON now enters the phase of looking for international partners. SPi's participation in this year's edition of Conecta Fiction & Entertainment reinforces the Portuguese production company's position on the international audiovisual fiction scene and its commitment to content that combines narrative quality, historical relevance, and commercial potential.
