Synopsis

GLORIA

Gloria is a historical spy thriller inspired freely by actual events. Centered on RARET, the re-broadcasting office of the Radio Free Europe (RFE).

Taking place in Portugal in the sixties (1968-69), the series shows how Glória, a small village in Ribatejo, became during the last years under the Salazar dictatorship, an unlikely Cold War stage where American and Soviet forces fought through dangerous sabotage maneuvers to achieve control of Europe.

At the center of this story is João Vidal, a young man from a family with connections in the Portuguese Fascist Regime, who was recruited by the KGB, after becoming politicized in the Colonial War. João currently works as an engineer for the Americans at RARET. João will find himself involved in the intricate webs of the spy game. He will question his loyalties and will ultimately understand that whatever side he is on, the world, particularly the one of espionage, is never black and white.

He studied engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Portugal. He served in the Army for two years, and had two more years of commission in Angola. His family belongs to the Lisbon elite. When in the African war, João’s political convictions changed, and he ends up turning towards the left, once confronted with the atrocities perpetrated on both sides and became aware of the system of social exploitation promoted by the regime, which became even more evident when he arrived at the colonies. Once back home he starts attending clandestine Communist Party meetings until he is recruited by a family friend, Alexandre, to become an agent at the service of the KGB. Taking into consideration the dangerous nature of the mission that takes him to the RARET, he intents not to connect with anyone emotionally, but it will happen. It will first happen with Mia, who trains him as an agent, and it will then happen with Carolina, a girl from the village.
