VANDA nominated for the Sophia Awards

On April 19th, the Portuguese Academy of Cinema announced the nominees for the 2023 edition of the Sophia Awards, in several categories, including Best Series/Telefilm, for which VANDA, a SPi production, is nominated. Also nominated in this category are 3 Women - Post Revolution (David & Golias), Causa Própria (Arquipélago Filmes) and Cuba Libre (HOP!).

The Sophia Awards 2023 has a total of 23 categories, in which the candidates for nominations were 46 feature films - 34 fiction and 14 documentary - 12 series, 5 telefilms and 50 short films - 26 fiction, 12 animation and 12 documentary.

Based on real events, VANDA tells the story of a desperate hairdresser who commits 12 bank robberies, using a plastic pistol, in an attempt to solve her financial and family problems. Placed in Lisbon, the series, written by Patrícia Müller and directed by Simão Cayatte, stars Gabriela Barros (Vanda), next to Joana de Verona (Elisa) and João Baptista (Mário). In Portugal, it is available on OPTO (SIC). It was recently acquired by the Canal+ Group for the streaming platforms POLAR+, in France, and LIONSGATE+, in Brazil, and also for transmission by the TV station Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), in Australia.

Remember that in the 2022 edition of the Sophia Award, GLÓRIA, the first original Portuguese series for Netlfix, also produced by SPi, was the winner in the same category.

The event, co-presented by actors Lourenço Ortigão and Inês Castel-Branco, was broadcast by streaming and can be seen at: https://www.academiadecinema.pt/anuncio-de-nomeados-ao-sophia-2023/
